Memorial Day Weekend Kicks Off With 'Free Toll Friday'
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBS) -- Memorial Day travel is expected to reach record numbers because of low gas prices. The Delaware Valley is expected to do its share of driving this weekend with thousands of families headed to the Jersey Shore.
What goes with low gas prices? Free tolls.
To celebrate Memorial Day weekend, Chickie's and Pete's is paying the tolls for hundreds of families driving to the Jersey Shore on Friday.
Families are first invited to the Farley Plaza around noon to help kickoff the unofficial start of summer with music, DJs, free crabfries and some surprise guests. WPHT's Rick Grimaldi and Dr. Mazz will be there too, broadcasting live starting at 3 p.m.
New Jersey State Police and the South Jersey Transportation Authority will also be there to provide safety tips for a fun-filled summer.
Then between 5 and 6 p.m. any cars driving through the Egg Harbor Toll Plaza on the Atlantic City Expressway will get through for free.
This summer marks the third year for the "Free Toll Friday" program. The restaurant chain has picked up the tolls for several thousand families to date.
