2015 Memorial Day Events In Philadelphia And The Suburbs

Formerly known as "Decoration Day," Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday in May and honors all of the Americans who have lost their lives in military service to this country. Unofficially, it also marks the start of summer. Here are some Memorial Day events happening in the City of Brotherly Love.

Historic Laurel Hill Cemetery, which houses the grave of Battle of Gettysburg war hero General George Gordon Meade, will offer a memorial service on May 24th at noon. The event includes a wreath-laying, speeches and honor guards. A reception will follow with beer and light lunch refreshments.

Special programs to honor those who fought for our nation's Constitution include "How a Nation Remembers," a show examining U.S. memorial landmarks, and a "Founding Fathers, Founding Documents" tour. Historic Washington Crossing Park is hosting a Memorial Day ceremony at the graves of Colonial soldiers. War re-enactors, drum and fife corps, a color guard and more will gather for the event, which includes placing American flags on the soldiers' graves.
