Medical Research Addresses Gun Violence
By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - When we talk about health, we often gloss over crime and injuries from crime. But all you have to do is look at the homicide rate in major cities to know it is a big factor...especially with our young people.
According to researchers from Yale, the risk of homicide in cities is great and in one major city that was studied...Chicago...41% of all homicides occurred within a network that contained less than 4% of the neighborhood's population.
The findings suggest that homicide is high in certain social circles. The Yale researchers suggest that our limited resources toward tackling gun violence should be focused toward this type of network analysis, which can guide immediate homicide reduction efforts by identifying specific points of intervention in crime epidemics.
This is an example of how medical science and social science can work together to make a difference.
