Medical Marijuana Group To Set Up Shop In South Jersey
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – One of the half dozen non-profit groups approved for the growth and distribution of medical marijuana wants to set up shop in an empty warehouse in Bellmawr, which came as a surprise to many officials in Bellmawr when the announcement was made earlier this week.
The Princeton-based Compassionate Care Foundation learned Monday, along with everyone else, they had gotten a permit from the state and that they'd be one of two operations in South Jersey.
"You couldn't go start a zoning process until you knew what region you were in. So we said if we got a southern license, we'd like to be based in Bellmawr," said Foundation Board Member David Knowlton.
Mayor Frank Filipek was surprised at first but now says he has an open mind to the idea as long as some concerns are addressed. "The treatment thing is completely secure. It has security 24 hours a day and I hope it's not going to be abused like it is in California."
New Jersey's medical marijuana law is considered the strictest in America. Filipek, Knowlton and others are set for a meeting early next month to discuss the plan.
