Mayor Nutter Tours Temple With Girard College Students

By Steve Tawa

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Mayor Nutter hopped a yellow school bus with high school students from Girard College, as they took a tour of the Temple University campus. It's all part of the Mayor's mission to increase Philadelphia's college attainment rate.

Mayor Nutter didn't bother putting on an overcoat as the group of mostly 16-year-olds from Girard bounced from building to building on either side of Liacouras Walk.

"This is all about Philly goes to college. We're going to talk about the rest of this inside."

Inside the Tech Center, Temple showed off its computers to the students from the boarding school that helps academically capable students from families with limited financial resources, like Tony Sonubi and Briana Davis.

"I'm looking to see if it's a good destination for me in the future. I'm in the 11th grade, searching for a college," said Tony Sonubi.

"I know Girard has a very prestigious program, and our schooling is far more difficult than most other schools," Briana Davis said.

The President of Girard College, Autumn Graves, is grateful that the Mayor is following up on a platform pledge to educate more Philadelphians, and make college more accessible.

"They will be the first people in their families to go on to college. This tour gets them in a college environment and makes it more real. It's one thing to talk about college, but it's another to walk on campus."
