Mayor Nutter Promises Action After Latest Philadelphia Recreation Center Violence
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia police are looking for a suspect in connection with yet another recreation center shooting, this one at the Mill Creek Recreation Center in West Philadelphia.
One man was left wounded in the latest incident; he was listed in stable condition.
Six people were wounded in a shooting by a gunman earlier this week at the Kingsessing Recreation Center in Southwest Philadelphia (see related story), and in late June a man was killed and three children were shot in a similar incident at a playground at 33rd and Diamond Streets in North Philadelphia (another related story).
The most recent shootings occurred as mayor Michael Nutter ordered some rec centers kept open longer to discourage flash mobs.
"Actually, I would like to disconnect one from the other," the mayor said today. "Whether we were keeping them open extra hours or not, recreation centers, public facilities, libraries, swimming pools, all of these public facilities, as I think I said two days ago, from our perspective are sacred places here in this city."
But not to everyone. The mayor has had harsh language for the perpetrators (related story) and promises they will be caught. There has already been an arrest in the murder case (related story).
