Mayor Nutter Holds Press Conference On Broad Street Run Security
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – As Philadelphia prepares for the Broad Street Run, city officials are asking that both runners and residents be prepared for a number of things.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Mayor Nutter stressed that while there is no specific threat to Philadelphia, the city should be prepared for enhanced security measures on race weekend.
All runners who plan to use the run's gear-check on race day must pack items in clear plastic bags that will be provided at the race expo, rather than the cloth bags used in past years. And if it's a nice day, runners are encouraged not to bring any gear with them. No bags, backpacks or coolers will be allowed in the Navy Yard either, organizers say.
Prior to the race, runners and spectators should sign up to receive emergency text alerts by visiting www.readynotifypa.org.
Similarly, if you see anything you feel is suspicious on race day, you should report it to police or call 911. Police officers will be stationed at every water station.
Finally, three evacuation shelters will be open along the race course. They are located at: Benjamin Franklin High School (Broad and Spring Garden Streets), South Philadelphia High School (Broad and Snyder Streets) and the School for Creative and Performing Arts (Broad and Christian Streets).
The Broad Street Run Expo is scheduled to be held at the Linc from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Residents are advised that there are Phillies games at nearby Citizens Bank Park on both days at 7 p.m.
