Mayor Nutter Announces Delay Of Monday Trash Collection Due To Severe Weather
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (CBS/AP) - In an effort to keep roads safe for commuters, trash collection on Monday will be suspended while sanitation vehicles help with snow-plowing duties, Mayor Nutter announced Sunday.
Residents who normally have their trash collected on Mondays should withhold their trash until Monday, Jan. 3. Streets Commissioner Clarena Thompson says that they are using many resources including over 500 pieces of equipment to keep the public safe and the streets clear.
"Our priority is public safety. Crews and trucks that normally are dedicated to trash and recycling will be fully engaged fighting this powerful storm," said Thompson.
Residents in eastern Pennsylvania are preparing for a winter storm the day after Christmas that has caused Philadelphia and other cities to announce snow emergencies which has resulted in cancellation of hundreds of flights. Authorities are urging residents to stay off roads that are expected to have eight to 12 inches of snow.
Commissioner Tolson advises residents to apply any commercial de-icer on steps and sidewalks early to prevent icy conditions and to check on sick and elderly neighbors.
