Martin Luther King High School Commemorates MLK Day In Phila.

By Mike DeNardo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Martin Luther King holiday had special significance at the Philadelphia high school named for King.

The doors inside Martin Luther King High had been an institutional grey color. But on this day, student volunteers repainted them an inviting purple.

"They're just so beautiful now. It's just like, 'Oh my goodness!'"

But the effort was more than cosmetic. King Day programs reflected the social justice climate -- one workshop was entitled "What to do when stopped by police."

Mayor Jim Kenney toured the school and was asked what Dr. King would say about the state of education at the school that bears his name.

"It's unjust. Because Dr. King cared more about justice about anything else. And it's unjust. It's unfair. It's unfair. It's unbalanced. The supplies and equipment and resources are not here," said Kenney.
