Married Lover Of Missing NJ Woman Pleads Guilty To Manslaughter
TRENTON (CBS/AP) - The man who allegedly killed his mistress with a hammer in 2007 plead guilty in a Trenton courtroom on Monday for an agreement of 25 years in prison.
Rosario DiGirolamo, 36, faced up to life in prison, but in an effort to lower his life sentence, he plead guilty to aggravated manslaughter. Under New Jersey law, he must serve 85 percent of his 25-year sentence (21 years, 3 months) before being eligible for parole.
Prosecutors say DiGirolamo attacked his 27-year-old lover, Amy Giordano, with a hammer after the two had an argument at her apartment. Prosecutors also allege DiGirolamo cut up her slain body with a saw, stuffed the parts in a suitcase, and dumped it in a pond in Staten Island, New York.
Afterwards, DiGirolamo drove to Delaware, where he abandoned the couple's 11-month old son Michael in a parking lot at Christiana Hospital. A nurse found him unharmed.
Authorities believed the remains were Giordano's because pictures of Michael were in the suitcase. DiGirolamo may have also worked with an accomplice by the name of John A. Russo Jr. who has been cooperating with investigators.
DiGirolamo is scheduled to receive his sentencing on February 3, 2011.
