Marreese Speights' Missed Dunk Proves Costly For Warriors
By Ray Boyd
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If you're a Sixers fan, you may be rooting for the Warriors in the NBA Finals to see Andre Iguodala and Marreese Speights win an NBA title. The presence of the former Sixers could also be a reason you're rooting against the Warriors, but we'll pretend everyone here wants to see them win it all.
Either way, you could not have possibly been rooting for what wound up happening to Speights in Game 2.
On a third quarter fast break, Speights was all alone after Iguodala tossed the ball ahead. Speights glided in with just seconds remaining in the quarter and took off for the rim attempting a two handed dunk.
The dunk was missed in somewhat embarrassing fashion. The ball bounced away and Speights wound up committing a frustration foul which caused him to fall over as the referee tripped and fell on top of him.
The sequence did not seem drastically important as the Warriors battled a double-digit deficit in the final minutes of the game anyway. However, they staged a big comeback which sent the game into overtime.
We all know the bucket could have changed the course of events to follow, but anytime a game goes into overtime, every missed opportunity in regulation becomes magnified. No missed opportunity was quite as glaring.
The Warriors ultimately lost in overtime by two points. It is safe to say that Speights probably did not rest too easy on Sunday night.
