Margate Landmark Sells T-Shirts To Help With Disaster Relief
MARGATE, NJ (CBS) – With luck and the help of dedicated volunteers, a beloved Jersey Shore landmark withstood Hurricane Sandy. Now, that landmark is reopening, with a new initiative to raise money for nearby storm victims.
Lucy the Elephant, in Margate, will reopen on Saturday, Nov. 10th at 10 a.m. after being shut down for two weeks due to Sandy. Thanks to a plea posted on the elephant's Facebook page asking for volunteers to help with the cleanup, the site was cleared of debris and power was able to be restored to Lucy just four days after the storm.
But the damage to the flooring inside Lucy's back legs, destruction to the beach grille and to the grounds around Lucy is estimated at more than $70,000.
To help offset the cost for repairs, a special "I survived Sandy" long sleeve t-shirt was created. In addition to raising money for repairs to Lucy, a portion of the proceeds from sales of the shirt, will be donated to the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief.
"We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from Lucy's Facebook friends; some came from more than an hour away to help," said Rich Helfant, Executive Director of the landmark. "Donating a portion of the proceeds from the tee shirt is our way of giving back to our community."
