Many Area Defense Contractors Breathing Easier After Latest Shutdown Modification
By John Ostapkovich
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The landscape has changed in terms of government furloughs, thanks to Defense Secretary Hagel's reinstatement of most civilian workers under him.
Some bases have been restored, thanks to the recall. A spokesman for the 111th Fighter Wing in Horsham, Pa. says the base is back to "full pull," ironically just two days after it had to cancel an event honoring the military because of the partial government shutdown.
The 514th Air Mobility Wing at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is also back to normal with the return of personnel there.
Lockheed Martin, the big defense contractor, is feeling the pain now, laying off about 2,400 people in 27 states, but mostly in the DC area. It says reasons include closed government buildings, furloughed government inspectors, or stop-work orders.
Boeing says that while it's working to limit the effects of the shutdown, there could be some furloughs in the coming days in its Defense, Space, and Security Division.
