Crews Rescue Man Trapped Underneath SEPTA Trolley
UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) - A man was rushed to the hospital after being sucked underneath a SEPTA trolley in Delaware County early Thursday morning.
The bizarre incident played out at about 8 a.m. at the 69th Street Terminal in Upper Darby.
According to officials, a 19-year-old man had just missed the route 101 trolley and decided to run next to the trolley near a fence in an attempt to catch the trolley at its next stop.
As the man was running in the narrow strip of concrete, the area narrowed and the man was struck by the trolley and got sucked underneath.
"The trolley driver came along and he hit the horn at him, tried to warn him to get out of the way. The guy just waved at him and he kept right on running and then he swallowed him up," eyewitness Al Harris explained.
Although the man was stuck underneath the trolley, officials said he was not run over by its wheels.
It took rescue crews nearly 30 minutes to use inflatable bags to lift the train up and remove the man. He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in an unknown condition.
