Man Shot In Arm After Leaving West Philadelphia Checkers
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A man says he is an innocent victim who got caught in a hail of gunfire in West Philadelphia.
Bullet casings and shattered glass litter the scene of the shooting on Market Street between 52nd and 53rd.
That is where police say a 30-year-old man claims he was hit by a stray bullet.
He is recovering this morning, shot once in the arm.
The shooting happened shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday.
The victim tells police he had just exited the Checkers at 52nd and Market Streets and started walking home when he heard gunfire.
He says the next thing he knew, he was shot.
The man tells authorities he ran around the corner to his home just two blocks away on the unit block of South Ruby Street.
He was then taken to Presbyterian Hospital for treatment.
There are a number of businesses in the area, and a pizza shop was hit by a stray bullet.
Police are now investigating what happened and are speaking with the victim to figure out what sparked the gunfire.
Chief Inspector Scott Small says, "He was not able to give us a description of the shooter or shooters. He was not able to give a motive. At this point he is telling us he was struck by stray gunfire."
The man is currently in stable condition.
