Man Living In Makeshift Prison Cell In North Philadelphia
By Cherri Gregg
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A local man has set up a makeshift prison cell in the middle of North Philadelphia. He's living there for the next few weeks.
"This is the only jail in the country built to keep people out of jail."
That's Michael O'G.L.A.W. Ta'Bon. He's on a 28 day prison and deathfast, where he'll spend his days dressed in an orange prison jumper and his nights sleeping behind bars in a makeshift wooden jail cell at 19th and West Girard.
"Every year we go to any of the worst neighborhoods in the country to show you don't have to be afraid of your people if you love them and number two, I show them jail before they have to experience it on their own.
Ta'Bon spent 15 years behind bars before starting the G.L.A.W. Foundation. Since 2006, he's worked to stop the school to prison pipeline with his one man show.
"I'll build a makeshift jail cell on stage in seven minutes and I'll show the kids how each bar is a bad decision that I made to box myself in."
Ta'Bon says he'll live in the jail cell until March 21st.
