Man Gets 4-8 Years In Prison For Rape Of Disabled Girl

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A 55-year-old Philadelphia man, who admitted raping a severely mentally and physically disabled 15-year-old girl (see related story), has been sentenced to four to eight years in prison with five years probation, as part of a plea deal. The victim's mother, who had dated the defendant for five years, says she wanted a longer sentence for this monster.
Defendant Orrin Thomas admitted he raped the victim. She suffers from cerebral palsy, is blind and, according to her mother, has the mental capacity of a two year old, can't talk, walk or feed herself.
The mother says she'd been with Thomas for five years.
"He eased his way in there, act like he was caring -- you know, like a father figure -- take over like a father figure to her, because her father is not active with her. And this is what he does. You know I just wish it was a longer sentence. It's nothing I can, you know, we did everything we could do."
The girl's family, and ultimately authorities, learned of the rape when it became obvious the girl was pregnant. The pregnancy was terminated, but there was a DNA match to Thomas.
"And he doesn't seem to have any remorse about the whole situation, which is really scary, so that is another reason it might need to be a longer sentence," the mother told KYW Newsradio.
The District Attorney's office has said it agreed to the deal because the defendant, with no record, took responsibility, pleaded guilty, spared the victim's family from testifying, and he'll be on probation until his late 60's and have to register under Megan's Law for the rest of his life.
