Malcolm Jenkins Named Finalist For NFLPA's Community Service Honor
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Malcolm Jenkins made a strong impact on the field in his first season with the Eagles and now the ball-hawking safety is being recognized for his impact off the field.
Jenkins has been named as a finalist for the NFLPA's Byron "Whizzer" White Award. The annual award is presented to those who go the extra mile to do community service in the city in which they play and their hometown.
"This recognition is more a reflection of my team than myself and honors all of the volunteers, sponsors and most importantly the board of directors that allow us to spread our wings across four states and make a lasting impact on thousands of people. With this nomination, I am more proud of them than myself," Jenkins said in a statement after being nominated.
The Malcolm Jenkins Foundation exists to provide support to children in Ohio, Louisiana, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. These are all areas where Jenkins has been impacted in life and in football.
The foundation provides youths with scholarships as well as football camps, after-school programs and youth safety initiatives.
Jenkins is among a list of finalists that includes Dustin Colquitt (Chiefs), Chad Greenway (Vikings), Jameel McClain (Giants) and Charles Tillman (Bears).
The winner will be announced on March 18th at the NFLPA's Board of Representatives meeting. The player honored will receive $100,000 donated to the charity of his choice.
The last Eagles player to win the award was Brian Dawkins in 2009. Troy Vincent also won the award in 2003.
