Make Sure To Take A Peek At The Full Moon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – If you're outside this evening, take a look at the night sky.

The full moon is expected to be slightly more prominent in the night sky. So says Derrick Pitts, chief astronomer with the Franklin Institute. "The moon has an elliptical orbit around the Earth. The elliptical orbit produces close approaches to Earth and more distant approaches to Earth called apogee and perigee. The perigee is closer to Earth than it has been in the last 18 years."

Not only will the moon be close to Earth, it will also be a full moon, "so the combination of the two helps to give the moon this slightly larger appearance, and appearing to be brighter in the sky," says Pitts.

Pitts says it's not a significant change from how a regular full moon looks, "But it certainly is a great way to get people out to look at the moon."
