Major Grant Brings Philabundance Closer To Opening Chester Grocery
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philabundance has just received a huge contribution toward its effort to open up a grocery operation in the city of Chester.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation selected Philabundance to receive a $1-million grant for its hunger relief efforts - a contribution the organization says will be applied to its fundraising campaign aimed at opening up a grocery operation for an underserved community.
"This brings us up to almost the 60% mark," says Bill Clark, Philabundance president and executive director. "It really kind of puts us on the home stretch but we still need substantial investment from individuals, corporations, and foundations. But we're hoping with the Robert Wood Johnson support it will telegraph to a lot of people that this is a project worth investing in."
Clark says Philabundance needs to raise about $4.5-million to open the community grocery in Chester. He says the community has been without a grocery store of its own for more than 10 years.
