Maintenance Worker Killed In Turnpike Accident
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — State officials say a tractor-trailer entered a Pennsylvania Turnpike lane that was closed for maintenance and struck two workers, killing one.
Turnpike commission CEO Mark Compton says in a statement that state police are investigating the accident that resulted in the death of 61-year-old equipment operator William F. McGuigan, of Ardsley.
Officials say the accident happened about two miles east of the Downingtown Interchange at approximately 8 a.m. Sunday, after crews had closed the right lane on the westbound side for maintenance.
Maintenance foreman Steve Rudzik sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from Paoli Hospital. The truck driver was taken to a hospital. There was no immediate word on his condition.
Gov. Tom Corbett said in a statement he was saddened by the news and extended sympathy to the McGuigan family.
