Magazine Names Philadelphia Tops In History And Culture
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Travel & Leisure magazine has just released a survey in which it asked American tourists to rate their favorite domestic destinations.
More than 40,000 votes were cast, with Philadelphia dominating in one major category.
New Orleans, Seattle, and New York were listed as the "friendliest" cities. New Orleans, San Juan, and Kansas City were favorites in the "fine dining" category.
Portland, Maine and San Diego were listed among the cities with the best weather. New York, New Orleans, and Santa Fe were named the best in shopping, with New Orleans by far the best for nightlife.
Where was Philadelphia? Unlisted in any of the aforementioned categories, but a clear leader in one group: "Culture."
For classical music, Philadelphia was listed second only to New York, fifth for museums, and fifth (behind New York, Chicago, and others) for live theatre.
But the survey left no doubt that as far as historical sites and monuments were concerned, Philadelphia was the unquestioned leader -- with Washington, DC a "faded second."
