Longtime Local Women's Lacrosse Star Builds A New Program
When it comes to women's lacrosse in the Philadelphia area, you'd be hard-pressed to find many names more respected than Alison Bruno's.
A standout player at Temple University who helped the school win the national championship in 1984, she has served as head coach at Philadelphia University and Villanova, also making stops at the club and high school level.
Now, she's been given the task of building a varsity program at Albright College (Division III) in Reading, Pa. This product of Great Valley High says she is excited to get started and put her stamp on the fledgling program:
"I just think that from my experience and my knowledge -- knowledge of the players in this area, knowledge of the coaches in this area, knowing what my competition is like -- I really think I can set that bar high and really make it hard for other coaches to challenge that."

Bruno says it wasn't until her senior year at Temple that she really started giving a lot of consideration to the idea of becoming a coach:
"I was a journalism major and I really wanted to become a sports information director and just write about sports, until one day I was playing and I realized how much of an influence my coaches had on me, how much I really looked up to them and admired them and what mentors they had become to me. So it was at that point, my senior year of college, that I decided I really wanted to coach lacrosse."
Bruno says right now her focus is on recruiting. The Albright women's lacrosse program will begin play at the varsity level in the fall of 2011.
