Long Sentence For West Phila. Woman In Torture-Murder of Godson, 3
By Tony Hanson
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A 25-year-old West Philadelphia woman was sentenced today to 28½-57 years in prison for beating and burning her little godson to death in 2011.
The defendant, a close family friend, was caring for the boy while his mother tried to get her life in order. But Philadelphia prosecutor Bridget Kirn says the evidence showed that Nadera Batson abused three-year-old Jaquinn Brewton daily, for months, using her hands, belt, shoes, even fire.
Kirn says she had argued for an even longer sentence:
"And the reason for that is the crimes she committed here -- murder, conspiracy, endangering the welfare of a child -- on a regular and ongoing basis, and possessing an instrument of crime for using a blowtorch against the boy, are so distinct that we wanted them to run consecutive, in addition making sure that any sentence she received would be long enough to make our community safe."
Kirn says Batson is "evil," adding that she committed atrocities on this child. And Kirn says she is not surprised Batson showed no remorse at sentencing.
