Long Beach Island Evacuation Order To Be Lifted Saturday

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Residents of Long Beach Island will be able to return to their homes Saturday morning.

Governor Chris Christie said during a Friday afternoon news conference in Seaside Heights that the LBI evacuation order would be lifted at 6 a.m. Saturday and the bridge will be open.

"This has been an unimaginable ordeal for many of our residents, but particularly for those on the barrier islands that remained under mandatory evacuation," said Governor Christie. "As painful as it's been, it was necessary to protect them from the dangers that Hurricane Sandy left in its wake, including gas leaks and other utility hazards, roads wiped out or heavily damaged and debris scattered across the landscape. We want them to return in an orderly, safe and secure way, so they can begin to take control of their lives and their property."

The mayor of LBI posted rules of "re-population" on the town's web site, wwww.lbieoc.org.

According to information posted on the site:

"ALL LBI residents, except Holgate , with re-entry placard or proof of ownership/residency, (Deed, tax bill, utility bill, drivers license etc…), and registered contractors. Homeowners and contractors will be allowed to begin demolition. All insurance adjusters and inspectors are permitted with documentation and work order."
