Logan Hope School Celebrates 11 Years Of Service

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A school, which started in a row home as an after-school program, will mark its eleventh year this fall.
Logan Hope School now serves students in grades K-8, predominantly from the neighborhood's Cambodian refugee community.
Anita and Ken McBain bought the row home on North 13th Street for the Logan Hope School in 1999. After major renovations, it opened in 2002. Now, the school serves 60 students.
Anita is the principal and says changing the mindset of hopelessness in the Cambodian community was part of the process. Now, some of the first students are graduating high school.
"What we're seeing is [that] kids that are graduating from our school are doing much better. Our first graduate has a full scholarship to Penn State. One guy was valedictorian, and he got a full scholarship to Villanova," says Anita.
"I like how everyone is family to you, so they care about our education and want us to go far in life," says Emily, a current seventh grade student.
Anita says the goal is to give hope to these students and their families for a better way of life.
