Lockerbie Bomber Seen At Protest In Libya, Victim's Mother Calls For Justice
CHERRY HILL, NJ (CBS) - Word that the only one convicted in the downing of Pan Am flight 103 more than two decades ago is in the streets of Tripoli, rallying in support of embattled Libyan strongman Muammar Qaddafi (see related article), has only served to embolden families of the victims to demand that justice be served.
The Monettis have fought the good fight ever since they lost their son, Rick, in the explosion over Lockerbie, Scotland just before Christmas, 1988. Abdelbaset al-Megrahi (pictured, being released from prison) was released by Scottish authorities two years ago, after doing eight years of a 27 year sentence, because he was supposed to be on death's door (see related article). Today, he's quite alive and there's nothing Rick's mother, Eileen, can do about that.
"Megrahi was the hit man but it was planned," Monetti told KYW Newsradio. "He was given the okay to do it by people higher up in the government."
And she believes Qaddafi should be among a group of Libyan officials hauled before the World Court to answer for their crimes. She doubts that'll happen, but is heartened by the fact the US is among a group of nations aiding Qaddafi opponents trying to topple the regime.
