Local University Offers Free Skin Cancer Screenings
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A local university is offering free skin cancer screenings in Philadelphia to help spread awareness of the disease.
Drexel Dermatology will be offering the screenings from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Drexel Convenient Care Center, located between Market and Chestnut Streets on 16th Streets.
Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Drexel University's College of Medicine, Dr. Christina Chung, says there is nothing to be afraid of during the screening process.
"We just give you a once over, Usually you are in a gown, and we just check you from head to toe. We just look at all your moles and spots and we let you know what looks good and what doesn't look so good," Dr. Chung explains.
As far as looking for abnormalities yourself, Dr. Chung says "people are generally aware of what is going on and if they say this looks like it might be changing, then that is the time people should come in and say I need to get this looked at."
Organizers say over one million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year across the country and someone dies of melanoma, a deadly but treatable form of skin cancer, nearly every hour.
No appointment is necessary and walk-ins are welcome.
