Local Soldier Killed In Afghanistan
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Department of Defense has announced the death of a Philadelphia soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
Private First Class John F. Kihm, 19, died April 19th in the Kandahar province.
Kihm, who joined the Army in March 2010 and had only served 31 days in Afghanistan, was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.
Kihm was the recipient of the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
The Department of Defense did not release the circumstances of his death.
Kihm was a 2009 graduate of Cardinal Dougherty. He enjoyed wrestling and cross country track. His parents tell Eyewitness News he was "very patriotic, but very humble about service."
He is survived by his mother, father and two older sisters.
