Local ShopRite Chain Organizes 1,000-Meal Thanksgiving Giveaway

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A local supermarket chain is partnering with neighborhood leaders to put food on the table for Philadelphians in need this Thanksgiving.
Inside a Brown's ShopRite store at 24th Street and Oregon Avenue today, family member Sandy Brown said she was delighted to be part of distributing 1,000 holiday meals that will give 6,000 people a feast to remember.
"It includes a turkey, stuffing, sweet potato pie, and all of the fixings that you would have for a full holiday dinner," she said. Each holiday basket will feed six to eight people.
Outside in the parking lot, teams of volunteers lined up next to a 40-foot trailer. LeRoy Thinner was making a pickup for Arise Academy Charter High School, at 11th and Market Streets.
"I'm picking up about 20 baskets for friends and families of the students," he said. "They'll have a good holiday."

There were also people making basket pickups from state senator LeAnna Washington's district, which includes Mt. Airy, West Oak Lane, and Olney.
"We have a lot of families without jobs, and they just simply can't feed their families," Washington said.
ShopRite donated the turkeys, and Glory Foods and Neighborhood Bakery provided the fixings for the meals.
