Local Red Cross Chapter Also Proving Its Worth Nationally

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania is on pace to respond to around 900 incidents this year, making them a vital part of the Philadelphia region. As it turns out, they're also a critical piece of the agency's national puzzle.
Over the weekend, eight volunteers with the Red Cross of Southeastern PA helped out with the agency's storm response in Dallas through a digital pilot-program. It's one of four programs that the agency is currently testing out, the others being a new financial assistance system, new, more focused recruiting methods and efforts to improve mental health first aid.
CEO Judge Renee Cardwell Hughes says what makes the local chapter of the Red Cross so special is the dedication of the volunteers and leaders, and its history:
"The Red Cross of Philadelphia, which is really the basis of it, began prior to the Johnstown flood (1889). So we have a long, dedicated history of helping our neighbors. It's just a part of who we are."
While the local chapter is highly respected nationally, Cardwell Hughes says the organization can always use more volunteers.
