Local Performer Develops Music-Based Anti-Bullying Program For Students
By John McDevitt
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - October is anti-bullying awareness month and an area educator and performer is doing her part with a music based program on the issue geared towards kids from Kindergarten to 12th grade.
The program is called "Stand up! Speak Out! on Bias & Bullying."
"The bottom line is every student deserves a good education is a safe space and i think music is such a great way to reach kids," says Susan Goodman.
Goodman does it all while up on stage, from speaking about bullying to performing original songs. She sings and plays two types of saxophones and a flute to a soundtrack of previously recorded music.
"In stead of just saying 'don't do that' we can address what's behind it," she says. "And we need to raise awareness, all of us. I mean we all have biases. Kids don't just make this stuff up they learn it somewhere and my other thing is to address the bystander issue, encourage kids to be allies."
