Local Organization Is Fighting Sexual Harassment With An App
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - An international organization that fights street harassment has a new weapon in its arsenal: an app to report it.
Rochelle Keyhan, founder of Hollaback Philly, says street harassment happens more than you might think and many times goes beyond catcalls and whistles, but mostly doesn't get reported.
Keyhan says things really got bad last week in center city Philadelphia.
"Someone walked into a store, started sexually harassing the clerk, shouting vulgar sexual things at her. When the clerk ignored the man, he approached her, touched her and lifted up her skirt," she said.
So a new campaign, "I've Got Your Back," will allows victims and observers of street harassment to safely report it through a special app for Android and iPhones. Victims of street harassment will receive supportive emails and will be urged to describe where it happened and when.
"And that's going to allow us, farther in the future, to have a comprehensive map of what's happening and where it's happening. There are no studies done on street harassment. So this will basically allow for the first time actual scientific study to be done on it."
