Local Man Relies on Experience to Pen Book on Caregiving
An Allentown man has written a book for caregivers, filled with tips he learned firsthand.
KYW's Lynne Adkins reports Fred Buse's wife Dot suffered with Alzheimer's for nine years and during that time, Fred was the primary caregiver.
He says he learned the hard way, what worked best for them:
"When she fell I tried to pick her up and found I couldn't do that, so I went to the local emergency squad to learn how to pick up a person and the next time that happened I knew how to do that, so I put that in the book."
His book, A Caregiver's Tips: My Wife had Alzheimer's Disease includes 130 tips for caregivers on such topics as legal matters, dealing with social security, progression of the disease, food, meals and medications.
Buse kept a daily journal and wrote down everything he encountered, what he learned and how it helped.
