Local Fund Hosts Free Cruise For Group Of Sick Children And Their Families
By Mike Dougherty
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Hundreds of seriously ill children and their families were treated to a day of fun aboard the Spirit of Philadelphia on Sunday.
Crew members volunteered their time to provide a free respite for the families. Peggy Dolan, founder of the Kelly Anne Dolan Memorial Fund, helps organize the event.
"A day like today is just a neat escape for them. You know it's a gift and those that can make it are treated royally by the staff."
The day included lunch, a two hour cruise and a whole lot of dancing and other live entertainment. Peggy White and her daughter Sarah look forward to it every year.
"One of the few boats we can get her on with her wheel chair and she has a great time. She loves the music and watching the kids and spending time here -- it's a really good time -- she asks for it all year long."
She says one of the best parts of the day for her is chatting with other parents who understand what a typical day is like for her family.
