Local FOP Files Grievance, Cite Deplorable Conditions At Facilities

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The local Fraternal Order of Police is bugged about bugs. The union has filed a grievance claiming police stations are in such terrible shape that officers are exposed to fleas and bed bugs, and infested their own homes.

The FOP has filed a contract grievance of what it says are deplorable conditions at many police facilities.

John McNesby, FOP President, says the problem goes beyond bugs.

"We have asbestos. We have sewers backing up into the locker rooms. The main thing that we're dealing with now is flea infested buildings with bed bugs also."

Everett Gillison, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety, says the Nutter administration is spending money for improvements.

"We have spent over the last three years about $11 million upgrading our facilities. This year we have about $10 million that we're spending."

Gillison says at least three new police facilities are opening soon. The FOP grievance will be heard by an arbitrator.
