Local Exhibit Looks At Spanish Jewish Culture

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – An exhibit of Spanish Jewish culture kicks off Sunday at the Gershman Y on Broad Street and there will be a free opening reception on Feb. 21st.
The exhibit celebrates Sephardic Jewish tradition after the inquisition, which caused many Jews from Spain to disperse across the Mediterranean.
Gershman Y exhibit curator Miriam Seidel says two artists are featured, including photographer Laurence Salzmann.
"We have sort of gone into his archive of amazing photographs of the Turkish Sephardic community there to pick out images that have not been seen before, showing the life of this community that many people don't know about," says Seidel.
The other featured artist is sculptor Micaela Amateau Amato.
"She's made an amazing installation of glass and ceramic that shows figures that are inspired by the experience of the Jews of Majorca (in Spain) which is one of the oldest Sephardic communities," Seidel explains.
The free exhibit runs through April 14th.
