Local Educator Asks 'Made In America' Performers To Help Philadelphia Schools
By Mike DeNardo
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - One local educator wants the performers at this weekend's Made in America festival to pitch-in to help Philadelphia's cash-strapped schools system.
Heather Marcus, a counselor laid off from Masterman High, but just rehired as a teacher, had an idea.
"I was thinking about the Made in America festival coming to Philadelphia and all the money that it generates for the city and I was hoping that the artists would be willing to donate some money to the schools. Obviously it's not a long-term solution. But we're in a pretty dire situation right now and any funding can help," said Marcus.
Marcus tweeted all of the Made in America performers. She says so far no one has agreed to give, but she did get a "follow" from Chuck D of Public Enemy. Even if her plea doesn't yield any money to hire back teachers, counselors and secretaries, she says she hopes her effort will help to keep attention on the school funding crisis.
