Local Developer, New Kensington CDC Build New Homes In Fishtown
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A local developer, a non-profit agency and Citizens Bank teamed up at an event to highlight a new mixed income development in the Fishtown section to replace some vacant lots.
Citizens Bank presented five local non-profits with $75,000 to help with housing issues, including repairs, weatherization, counseling and outreach.
Developer Courtney Ludeman of Postgreen Homes is putting up 14 eco-friendly homes - called Awesometown - along a stretch fronting the 400 block of Moyer and Thompson Streets.
"Our main focus is building modern and extremely sustainable housing," Ludeman said.
Ten of the units are market rate, priced at $430,000.
They will subsidize four affordable units, which will be about 50% of market rate.
Shanta Schachter of New Kensington CDC said word of mouth spread quickly about the development to qualified potential owners, with limited income.
"We held a lottery for people who are interested," Schachter said, "and we had 60 people respond for those four units."
New Kensington CDC's neighborhood revitalization focus helps folks maintain and afford a home.
