Local Dentists Trade Candy For Cash, For A Good Cause
By Jim Melwert
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- More than 41 million kids will stock up on sugary sweets as they go trick or treating Thursday, and some area dentist's offices are enticing kids to trade in some of that candy.
The National Confectioners Association estimates we spend about $2.4 billion on Halloween candy.
There's a growing trend of buy back programs or dentists offices offering cash for candy, including Briglia dental group in West Chester, where they'll give children a dollar a pound for up to five pounds of candy. The candy is then donated to Stockings for Soldiers, which ships it to troops overseas.
Dr. Ron Briglia says, "It helps everyone; it's a win-win situation."
He also says they collected over 900-pounds of candy last year; this year, they're shooting for over 1,000.
Dr. Briglia adds that they'll have cards children can fill out that will be sent to troops, along with the stockings.
Candy will be collected on Monday and Tuesday, November 4th and 5th, from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. at Briglia Dental Group across from Chester County Hospital at 600 E. Marshall Street in West Chester.
