Local Consortium Creates Health Business Startup Accelerator

By Lynne Adkins

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Philadelphia-based insurance company and two other local organizations want to help potential health care companies make it in Philadelphia.

Independence Blue Cross, Penn Medicine, and Bryn Mawr-based Dreamit Ventures have announced that they will select ten startup companies from around the country, give them up to $50,000 each, and help them develop the next best concept or technology in health care.

But it's not a giveaway.  IBC president and CEO Dan Hilferty says the company leaders must relocate to Philadelphia and spend four months here, learning.

"They'll get everything from training on how to fund their business idea to how to develop a business plan, (and) how to reach out to external resources they might need to make their dream a reality," Hilferty tells KYW Newsradio.

Applications are being accepted, through February 8th,  at dreamitventures.com.
