Local Congressmen Speak Out On Possible Military Strike On Syria
By Kim Glovas
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Some local congress members are reacting to the President's decision to ask for Congressional approval of a military strike on Syria.
Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Bob Casey, a democrat, says he'll vote in favor of a military strike:
"It's in our national security to make sure that both Iran and Hezbollah are not strengthened by what happened in Syria. But it's also in our national security interest that chemical weapon use by any nation or any group at any time, is a threat to the world and a threat to our troops in the region and a threat to the American people."
Congressman Rob Andrews, a democrat from South Jersey, however, is firmly against any military action against Syria:
"What I've heard thus far, that there's a civil war between two sides in Syria, maybe three sides, that one of the sides did something horrible to the other sides and that's a fact. If that's all there is and as sympathetic as I am to the people of Syria, I don't think that rises to the level of an urgent American national interest, and I would not be supporting a military strike."
KYW Newsradio tried to contact all members of the Delaware Valley congressional delegation. No republicans responded.
