Local Car Owners Consider Taking Action Against PPA

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Dozens of disgruntled motorists met this weekend to discuss filing a class action lawsuit against the Philadelphia Parking Authority.

Lawrence Clark, founder of the People's Choice Movement Coalition, says the point of the meeting was to gather testimony from motorists whose cars had been towed and then sold at auction:

"You heard a couple testimonies that people said they were towed illegally; but when they went to go get their money back, the city doesn't want to give it to them."

Attorney Don Vittorelli:

"That's the biggest problem. That's why we're here because it's not fair right now. It's a bullying tactic by the Philadelphia Parking Authority."

Florence Grizella of Northeast Philadelphia says her car was towed due to a paperwork mistake on the part of her insurance company:

"I'm not trying to be a slickster. I'm not trying to get away with nothing. But fair is fair and wrong is wrong."

By the time she got it worked out, she says her car had been sold to the highest bidder:

"You know, I don't need to cry, it doesn't change anything but I'm tired of getting screwed for all the nonsense that goes on in this city."

The group says they invited the parking authority to send a representative to the meeting. No one from the agency was present.
