Live Concert Venue Planned For Former Factory Building Near Sugarhouse Casino

By Pat Loeb

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's a name associated with some of the greatest rock performances of all time, and now it's coming to Philadelphia's expanding waterfront area.

The "Fillmore Philadelphia" is slated to open this fall, at Frankford and Delaware Avenues.

Today, there was lots of hoopla for the announcement that concert production company Live Nation would transform the abandoned Ajax Metal Company building into what executive Don Gastion called its "best venue in the country."

-----

"The musicgoing fan continues to raise the bar, and I think we have to do the same thing," Gastion said today.  "I don't think you can just put a bunch of speakers inside a building and charge $50 for somebody to come to a concert.  I think you have to give them more than that."

The Fillmore Philadelphia will be plushly decorated and include a food-and-beverage program.  A smaller club on the top floor will feature local acts.

Mayor Nutter says it will contribute to the dynamism in Fishtown.

"This is going to be a spectacular venue and just drive more traffic to the waterfront, which is what we want, but I think it starts to become a destination of its own in terms of people up and down the east coast," the mayor said.
