Liquor Control Board Says Half-Off Internet Sales Can't Include Booze
HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) - Folks who sign up for "half-off" discount programs at local eateries offered by CBS Philly, Groupon and other organizations should know that under Pennsylvania law, alcoholic beverages don't qualify for the discount.
Liquor Control Board spokeswoman Stacey Witalec says yes, licensees can offer drink specials but only at certain times and in certain ways specified in the "Happy Hour" provisions of Pennsylvania liquor law.
"Discounts cannot be given on alcoholic beverages across the board. There are obviously exceptions that people enjoy every day when you go to happy hour or a daily drink special in a licensed establishment," she said. "But in terms of using a discount for the alcohol itself, that is prohibited under the current regulations."
Witalec says the restrictions are designed to get licensees to encourage customers to drink responsibly. She says people who sign up for restaurant discount programs need to understand that laws vary from state to state.
