License Deadline Passes, NJ Medical Marijuana Debate Rages On
TRENTON, NJ (CBS) - The applications are in for groups wishing to sell medical marijuana in New Jersey, but the controversy is just beginning.
New Jersey's deadline for applying for a license to sell medical marijuana has passed, but only 20 groups signed up.
Chris Goldstein, media coordinator for the Coalition for Medical Marijuana in New Jersey, said this number is low, "The current legislative debate over the very strict rules proposed by Governor Chris Christie are keeping a lot of businesses away."
Goldstein said the big problems with the proposed pot rules are a 10% cap on THC levels and limits on the strains of marijuana that a pot producer can grow.
Goldstein said the proposed rules are too strict, "If they can get something better on the underground market why would they want to participate in the legal program?"
Governor Christie has said the proposed changes will help prevent abuse of the new law.
