Let's Get Pennsylvania's Bridges Fixed, Corbett Tells Legislators

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- Governor Corbett today turned up the heat on lawmakers still wrestling with legislation that would raise new funds for roads, bridges, and mass transit in Pennsylvania.
A stern Corbett displayed chunks of concrete from a crumbling Harrisburg bridge to drive home his point that action on transportation funding is a matter of public safety and quality of life.
"And I ask you to report this: this is not a partisan issue," he said. "I don't see 'Democrat' or 'Republican' written on the roads, on the bridges. I don't see it on the transit signs. And I think that point needs to be made."
The governor is urging voters to contact their legislators and make known their desire for passage of a transportation funding bill.
Negotiators have reported progress in talks intended to produce a compromise bill and those talks will continue over the next several weeks (see related story). After Wednesday's session, lawmakers do not return to the capitol until mid-November.
