Let Them Eat Cake Competition In Center City Raises Money For Cancer
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A cake competition at the Loews Hotel on Monday doubles as a fundraiser aimed at battling women's cancer.
The seventh annual Let Them Eat Cake competition is a fundraiser.
"It is a competition among bakers in the Delaware Valley. There are 40 of them this year and they compete for prizes like best of show, best tasting, best student, and best use of theme. This year's theme is Love throughout The Ages. And also this year we have the Audience Choice Awards, where we allow people who purchase tickets to vote on the best cake of their choice," said Amy Fitzpatrick with City of Hope.
She says each year the cakes get more elaborate, and each year their fundraising goal grows. "The money goes towards women's cancer and the money is raised by sponsorships, vendors and the tickets sales. We also have raffles. All the proceeds go to City of Hope."
Wedding planner Mark Kingsdorf says everyone is invited to Monday evening's event at the Loews Hotel. If you're casting your vote for the best cake, what should you look for?
"I think what you're mostly looking for is the taste and the texture. The problem with a lot of cakes is they're very dry. I have not had a bad cake at these events and the brides actually get the opportunity to test so many different flavors that they don't actually have to do their cake testing, they can do it here and say this is the flavor I want, and they can actually even talk to the bakers themselves and see if they're available for hire."
