Lentz Fundraiser Draws Washington VIPs, Protests
One of the big Congressional races in this region got a bit of star power today: a lunchtime fundraiser featuring vice president Joseph Biden and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
KYW's Mike Dunn reports the event drew some protesters and had already drawn fire from the candidate's GOP opponent:
"Hurry hurry hurry, the Nancy Pelosi political circus is coming to town…"
That's from a political ad for Pat Meehan, the Republican candidate for the 7th Congressional District, attacking the fundraiser for Democratic opponent Bryan Lentz.
The fundraiser, at the Sheraton Hotel in center city, featured not just Pelosi but VP Joe Biden. One of those attending was Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter:
"Their presence obviously sends a very, very strong message as to how seriously both the House and White House take this particular race. It's a winnable race."
The fundraiser was closed to the press. Two hundred attended, paying anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000 to rub elbows with Biden and Pelosi.
Lentz and Meehan are vying to succeed Rep. Joe Sestak, who is running for the US Senate against the GOP's Pat Toomey.
