LaSalle Students Give Up Their Hair For Child-Cancer Fundraiser
By Mark Abrams
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- LaSalle University's advance in the basketball playoffs isn't the only "buzz" on that college campus.
Today, in the lobby of the LaSalle Union building in North Philadelphia, a makeshift barber shop was set up during lunch time by the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, as volunteers lined up to get a buzz cut (or, slightly more drastic, have their heads shaved) to raise funds for children with cancer.
It's the second year for the St. Baldrick's Foundation event on campus, and sophomore Ben Arnold of Chalfont, Pa. says the cause is something that's close to home for him.
"My father was a cancer survivor," he says, "and cancer's always been something that's close to my heart and the rest of the brothers here."
Arnold says they're hoping to raise $3,000 through this event.
Joseph Meyrick, who graduated from LaSalle last spring, came back to spearhead this continuation of the effort he launched in 2012.
"I think it's a big thing because we're helping kids who are sick with the cancer," he tells KYW Newsradio. "So, I want to get research out there to help them who need it the most."
There were plenty of volunteers lining up, cash in hand, for a special cut for a very important cause.
